Different Types of Adoptions

Robert handles a variety of adoption cases, including:

  1. Stepparent Adoptions: When a custodial parent marries, the stepparent may want to officially adopt a child. If the other biological parent is living, that parent's rights have to be terminated before a stepparent adoption can take place. In some cases, the biological parent may give up parental rights. (A step-parent adoption means the biological parent will no longer be responsible for paying child support.) In other cases, there may be cause to go through the legal process of terminating parental rights.

  2. Independent Adoptions: Once parental rights are terminated, a child can be adopted by someone who is a relation, foster parent, family friend or guardian. In many cases, this involves situations where a child was freed up for adoption in a dependency and severance proceeding.

  3. Grandparent (Relative) Adoptions: When a child's parents are not living or when their parental rights have been terminated, in many cases grandparents or other relatives (an aunt, uncle or an adult sibling) may wish to adopt the child.
